The goal of the project is to advance the field of solid-state batteries through the systematic development of sulfide solid-state electrolyte films and composite electrode materials, culminating in the fabrication and testing of single-layer pouch cells. Ampcera, Argonne National Lab, and Forge Nano are collaborating to address critical challenges in solid-state battery technology, responding to the need for sustainable energy storage solutions.

With a goal to establish roll-to-roll (R2R) manufacturing processes for SSE films and scale up production, the project outlines several critical milestones. These include advancing atomic layer deposition (ALD) coatings for SSEs, integrating ALD-coated SSEs into R2R processes, and implementing robust monitoring methods for R2R lamination processes. These milestones are supported by performance testing and validation efforts, culminating in the creation of a comprehensive techno-economic model.

Commercial Value: ALD-coated SSE materials are commercially available on the market. The ALD-coated materials enable environmental stability in ambient conditions reducing manufacturing costs. Moreover, the coated materials enhance chemical stability with active cathode materials enabling higher voltages to be reached – increasing energy density.
